DuMore No. 1 pulley arrived. Options
Thanks for posting the size of the #1 pulley for the Dumore 44-011 toolpost
grinder, DoN. It's not too surprising to me that the new replacement part is also a crowned steel pulley. It's good that you caught the plain washer against the grinding wheel before using the grinder. FWIW, I normally always disassemble everything that's used or of questionable quality (China) before using them, particularly electrical items/tools. Ya never know what might've been done that was good enough for a previous user/owner. I don't suppose that the #1 pulley had any divots drilled into it for balancing. It looks a bit weird to see 2 spots on the #2 pulley drilled, as small as it is. -- WB .......... metalworking projects www.kwagmire.com/metal_proj.html Copied from Goog RCM archives: IIRC, Wild Bill asked what the pulley was like which I ordered from DuMore. It is the standard crowned steel one, not the flanged aluminum ones. I suspect that the aluminum ones were made by someone who got a grinder without *any* pulleys, and did not know about the self-centering features of a crowned pulley with a flat belt. The nominal size was suppose to be 7/8" (0.875"), and the one which I received measured 0.863" so all the accuracy which I was maintaining was not needed. :-) In checking other things out, I discovered that only one side of the wheel had the proper relieved flange. The other was a flat washer, and smaller than the pressure diameter of the one which was fitted, thus it was a time bomb waiting to go off. I've got measurements, and will be machining up a second one soon. Tonight I made the ring to slide around the post to set the grinder's shank centerline on the centerline of the lathe headstock and tailstock, to save fiddling every time I mount it. (I made one for the smaller Series 11 as well.) Thanks to all for all the information and help. Enjoy, DoN. |

I agree -- but the flanged aluminum pulleys came from *somewhere*. :-) It's good that you caught the plain washer against the grinding wheel before using the grinder. FWIW, I normally always disassemble everything that's used or of questionable quality (China) before using them, particularly electrical items/tools. Ya never know what might've been done that was good enough for a previous user/owner. It came pre assembled with the No. 2 on the motor and the No. 4 on the spindle (slowest speed for largest wheel), and the stone (about a 2-1/2") on the other end. The standard flange was on the outside side, and the inside was mostly hidden by the wheel guard, so I couldn't see it, and I assumed that it had been run that way before, so I did one test spin-up to check the motor after checking the bearings with no belt first. At least the wheel did not explode that time, and now I have to make the duplicate flange. A bit of confusion has kept me from that for a while: 1) Nasty two-day intestinal bug. 2) Our younger cat has vanished, and we can't seem to find her. One possibility was that she was in the shop since the door to the shop from the foyer blew open during some really strong wind gusts (it does from time to time) so there was a chance that she had gone in there. (Also a chance she got onto the deck, or to some hinding place elsewhere in the house. I'm making a TV camera on a pole for checking some of the harder to access places. 3) Eye exam shows advanced cataracts in both eyes. Surgery scheduled. I don't suppose that the #1 pulley had any divots drilled into it for balancing. Nope. Not a sign. At least right now I can check it without needing glasses -- the cataracts seem to shift the focus from distance to close-up. I used to be good at infinity, even after I lost focus accomodation. Now, I'm sharp at about 10". That should jump back out to a more reasonable distance after the surgery. It looks a bit weird to see 2 spots on the #2 pulley drilled, as small as it is. Right. I was surprised too -- two very small diameter holes, deeper than I would have expected. I guess that was to keep them out of the nut contact area. I haven't yet checked the drill size, but I would not be surprised to find them at #60 or so. When sharp vision moves down to 10", that is just a bit too close for the computer screen to be comfortable. I'm currently using my wife's driving glasses as I type. Thanks again, DoN. -- Email: | Voice (all times): (703) 938-4564 (too) near Washington D.C. | http://www.d-and-d.com/dnichols/DoN.html --- Black Holes are where God is dividing by zero --- |
