What is the Liberal Left and What is its Goal? by TYSK "Any man under 30 who is not a liberal has no heart, and any man over 30 who is not a conservative has no brains." — Winston Churchill† In the interests of accuracy, for which metalworkers should strive, there is no validated reference to Churchill having said it. The phrase originated with Francois Guizot (1787-1874): "Not to be a republican at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head." It was revived by French Premier Georges Clemenceau (1841-1929): "Not to be a socialist at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head." The remainder of the quotes are suspect by association. I will leave you to do the research. Research that he'd have done himself if he cared less about his posturing and more for the truth or meaning of what he was posting. Another "quote" I see frequently: "A wise man's heart directs him toward the right, but the *foolish man's heart" directs him toward the left." Ecclesiastes 10:2 It's usually part of a crass tirade against "The Left", whatever that really means these days. A little research will show these translations. Ecclesiastes 10:2 GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995) A wise person's heart leads the right way. The heart of a fool leads the wrong way. Bible in Basic English The heart of the wise man goes in the right direction; but the heart of a foolish man in the wrong. Geneva Study Bible A {a} wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart is at his left. (a) So that he does all things well and justly, where as the fool does the contrary. Wesley's Notes 10:2 Heart - His understanding is always present with him and ready to direct him. He mentions the right hand, because that is the common instrument of action. A fool's - His understanding is not effectual to govern his affections and actions. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary 2. (Ec 2:14). right-The right hand is more expert than the left. The godly wise is more on his guard than the foolish sinner, though at times he slip. Better a diamond with a flaw, than a pebble without one. Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary 10:1-3 Those especially who make a profession of religion, should keep from all appearances of evil. A wise man has great advantage over a fool, who is always at a loss when he has anything to do. Sin is the reproach of sinners, wherever they go, and shows their folly. -- John R.
