I keep thinking that if we use the message id field, and as a community, rated messages as spam and ot and had newsreaders that would check a database to score each message before downloading we could kill all this disruption. I'm calling this idea, community scoring in case some one implements it. This way everyone could have their two cents as a moderator. Wow, just removed everything that came from " and took all the
trash to the curb! Thanks!!! Way too complicated. Just killfile all traffic coming from GoogleGroups, and be done with it. If that's too heavy-handed, then use filter rules to build a whitelist of Google Gropers whose posts you do want to see, and killfile everything else. |

Wow, just removed everything that came from " and took all the trash to the curb! You missed the point. Newsgroups are NOT email, and what email address a person chooses to put on his posts is *completely*unrelated* to what newsserver he's posting through. Nearly all Usenet spam originates on Google Groups newsserver(s). Much of this spam does *not* show an email address @gmail.com in the from header Many people use gmail.com email addresses, but post to Usenet through newsservers *other* than Google Groups. Thus, killfiling posts with an email address @gmail.com will result in: a) failing to killfile a lot of stuff that is spam, and b) killfiling a lot of stuff that is not spam. What you want to do is killfile any post with "googlegroups" in the message-id header. Never mind the from header -- anybody can put anything in that. It's not a reliable means of identifying spam posts. Thanks!!! Way too complicated. Just killfile all traffic coming from GoogleGroups, and be done with it. It's not a reliable means of identifying spam posts. Yabut... anyone can put googlegroups into his Message-ID too. Check this post. So what?? The point is to filter out spam. If the message-ID says GoogleGroups, it's probably spam. Course, I have no idea why anyone would want to do that other than to demonstrate it. Hey, if you want to make it look like your posts are coming through Usenet's most notorious spam portal -- and get all your traffic killfiltered -- that's up to you. Be my guest. NNTP-Posting-Host: is inserted by google, so that gets you a lot finer-grained filter. Not only is it no finer-grained, it's actually considerably less useful. is *also* inserted by Google, which is more than sufficient reason to decide that a post should be killfiltered: any post that actually does come from GoogleGroups should be assumed to be spam unless proven otherwise, and since there is no legitimate reason to make a post *appear* to have come from GoogleGroups when it did not, those posts should be killfiltered as well. However, some news servers don't provide the NNTP-Posting-Host: header to clients, which makes that completely useless for filtering, and brings you back to looking for "googlegroups" in the Message-ID: header as being the only reliable way of killfiltering Google-originated spam. -- Regards, Doug Miller (alphageek-at-milmac-dot-com) Join the UseNet Improvement Project: killfile Google Groups. http://www.improve-usenet.org Get a copy of my NEW AND IMPROVED TrollFilter for NewsProxy/Nfilter by sending email to autoresponder at filterinfo-at-milmac-dot-com You must use your REAL email address to get a response. If you're using NewsProxy (Nfilter) with your newsreader, such a setup would look like this: * flag: from:sleepy|grumpy|dopey|sneezy|happy|bashful|doc * drop: message-ID:googlegroups Any post from any one of the seven posters named will come through. Anything *else* from Google Groups won't. That might be a good solution. I hope my leafnode nntp server is sitting on my lan ip or I can change it to that interface or I won't be able to use my localhost to run nfilter. Running the two statistics programs has introduced a bit of complexity to my configuration. I'll play with it soon. I spent the last two days getting pop3s working since www.cygwin.com changed the behaviour of imap to using ssl for pop3 and uw-imap3d started looking in the wrong place for my mail files. Good thing I like playing with computers. After configuring pop3s on 995 $ ln -s /var/mail /var/spool/mail got uw-imap3d looking in the right place. You can have a lot of fun on Winblows with Cygwin.
