Edwards: Americans should sacrifice their SUVs
Mark Rand wrote:
I was just looking for the nearest fit to 19(us)mpg. My preferred daily driver is the (UK) Ford Transit for a 1 1/2 ton payload and 28(us)mpg. My daily driver is a Saturn SL1 and a light trailer. (5x8', 2000# GVWR) Without the trailer, I get 35 MPG. With the trailer, not as good but I don't need a truck to bring home some insulation, mulch, plywood sheets or over sized items. When I need to pick up a machine in the 3/4 ton range, I get my uncle with a truck that sucks the lifeblood out of him to pull it and get reacquainted with why I no longer own a truck. Pumping in US $100 into the fuel tank is not on my list of fun things to do. When I had a 14 mile commute to work and back a 18-22 mpg truck was fine, with a 70 mile commute it isn't. Market forces do determine vehicle choices. Wes |
