Where Can I Get Rid of Aluminum in Dallas, TX Area?
Over the years, from taking surplus equipment apart or whatever, I've
accumulated about 300 lbs of aluminum. Most of this is in the form of extrusions and 0.060" plate (basically heatsink material, and flat stock that constituted housings for electronic equipment I salvaged). I was sort of saving it with the thought of trying some backyard casting, but I never seem to get around to it. Also, I've recently come into a bunch more equipment that is going to yield a bunch more aluminum, so a supply for future hobby uses is not an issue. Anyway, I've had folks tell me numbers from 30 cents to 80 cents a pound, plus all sorts of horror stories about experiences with scrap dealers/buyers. There are too many of those guys in the yellow pages for me to sort out. If anyone on this group has personal experience with selling aluminum in the Dallas area, and can recommend a dealer based on honesty and good price, please respond. thanks, Martin |

If it's really just aluminum, ie clean and you've removed all the mixed
metal/hardware/othercrap, you should be able to take it to a recycler and sell it for decent money. The trick is finding the right guy (same boat I'm in). Of course, if you're out in Podunk somewhere it might not be worth your trouble for the $25 you might get (assuming it is cleaned aluminum). Martin |

Heat sinks are generally pure aluminum aren't they? I pay 1.50 a pound
for 6061 at Liberty Metals. Of course, it is in rod and slab form. If you are looking to just get rid of it, I might be talked into taking it off your hands. Andy |

I should rephrase. When I BUY aluminum blocks and rod at Libery Metals,
it is 1.50 a pound. I don't work there. I'm just some guy with the same backyard casting idea you had. Andy |

There is also Lake June scrap metal on the East side of town. Open
Saturdays. "Martin" wrote in message oups.com... Over the years, from taking surplus equipment apart or whatever, I've accumulated about 300 lbs of aluminum. Andy,
Are you in the Dallas area? If you are doing backyard casting, I would REALLY enjoy a few tutorial conversations on melters. Martin |

Thanks for the leads, everyone. I will call the vendors you suggested.
Of course, I have always said "re-USE, don't re-CYCLE", and I do my best to adhere to that philosophy. Anything I can incorporate into a new use, without sending it through a bunch of middlemen that re-melt/re-claim part of it, gives me the satisfaction of having preserved a portion of the manufacturing energy that went into making it the first time around. best regards, Martin |

I live in Irving and have a workshop in Keller. I'm just starting out
with the metal casting so I don't know if I could generate much of a tutorial. However, so far, it has been super, super easy. I actually melt down aluminum cans for practice in hole in my yard. Good enough for the Egyptians, good enough for me! Andy |
