In a smirking response to Senator Chuck Grassley, Attorney General Alberto
Gonzales enlightened us on a bit of United States history heretofore unknown.
From the video clip:
Senator Grassley:...225 years use of the exercise of the power of commander in

Gonzales: I gave in my opening statement similar examples where President
Washington, President Lincoln, President Wilson, President Rooselvelt have all
authorized electronic surveillance on a far broader scale...

In his Senate testimony, Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales claimed that "President

On a good day and if an Indian, bear, wind, neighbor or an act of God didn't
knock him (no ladies doing that job) down.

It was loose goose at the best. And it was under declared war. We are not under
declared war. Therefore any spying on U.S. Citizens must be reported in fact by
3 days.

Washington clearly didn't. But tapping telegraph lines was common during
the civil war. They usually used a lineman's "pocket relay."
