Making 'legs' calipers.
I saw a link here, recently, to a pair of 'legs' calipers that were on
E-bay but I can't find it now. I am interested in making a pair of these and wondered if anyone might have that link, or another one, that would show a clear picture of these. Thanks. Lewis. ************ |

oups.com... I saw a link here, recently, to a pair of 'legs' calipers that were on E-bay but I can't find it now. To find the thread, search this newsgroup for the word "sexist" in the subject line. But here's the Ebay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=4586160899 I am interested in making a pair of these and wondered if anyone might have that link, or another one, that would show a clear picture of these. Frankly, I didn't find these "legs" particularly sexy, but then I'm a "long, slender legs" type of man. In any case, you can get an idea as to how they're made. The artistic part is up to your discretion. - Michael |

Making 'legs' calipers.
Lewis
Photos of them show up in lots of antique tool collector books (many of them much more risqué than the ones on eBay). See, for example, Sandor Nagyszalanczy's "Tools, Rare and Ingenious" (Taunton Press, 2004), page 67 for 3 examples. Make a xerox, scale to the size you want, glue on a piece of thin metal and cut it out with a jeweler's saw. When you get that leg finished, flip it over and use it for the template for the other one. Drill and rivet and you're done. Jim |

These really need to be made by studying a live model. ;^) -- Cats, coffee, chocolate...vices to live by |

Lewis. ************ Well, that pair from ebay is now part of my "funny tool" box. I scanned an image of them tonite. I'll put it up here for a few days in case anyone else wants to make their own: http://home.comcast.net/~jwisnia18/temp/legs.jpg Thickness of the legs is .050" The diameter of the rivet head and the washer are both 0.437". The rivet and the washer both looked to be machined from the solid, they both have turning marks on them. The rivet head and washer are both about .040" thick with a chamfered edge. The legs are slightly sprung so the heels are coplanar when closed. It looks like the "friction" comes from peening the rivet just right, but I can't see what's under the rivet head and washer, so maybe there's something like a thin apring washer hidden in a groove under one of them?
