Default 1 inch dia. R-8 collets

Does an R-8 collet with a one inch ID hold reliably? The grip area is
totally outside the taper.

Been there, done that. Take Chief's advice and just buy an endmill holder. I
think 3 teeth of a 4 flute endmill made a cut before the fingers of the
collet broke.
I guess you could say that they really didn't cut any material off, probably
broke the finger on the first tooth but with the rotation of the
cutter/collet there was enough support to allow the cutter to rotate until
it hit the missing finger in the collet and fall out.
