Default water softner - water in tank

We bought this house that has a water softener about two years ago.
At first, you could always see some water in the tank. About a year
ago it quit working and we had it repaired (one minor part). After
that time, it uses a lot less salt and there is no water visible in
the tank.

However, the recharges seem to be less effective. If I add a couple
of gallons of water into the tank, the recharge seems a lot more
effective.

Does this indicate a problem? Should it have water in the tank?

Also, since the repair I've raised the hardness level a notch about 4
times, but it still usually runs out of soft water a day before it
recharges. I'll be taking a shower and notice how bad the water is,
and sure enough, it will have scheduled a recharge for that night.

Sounds to me like the settings were botched after the
repair, or the repair wasn't complete. Yes, I'd expect to
see water at certain parts of the cycling, but not all the
time. Your descrip of the problem is typical of improper
settings, whether it's by knob or by internal parts or
settings.

It would seem to me that the float in the brine tank needs re-setting. My
water level is about an inch above the grid that the salt sits on. That's
the height or level you want to set the float at. Of course, there may be
other factors. Check out this site...it's all about water softeners.

Could be, Tony, but the "float" on my brine tank is the same height as the
water level in my brine tank. I am soooo an amateur, but have had water
softeners forever.
Check out the link in my post, list a question and I feel confident that an
accurate solution will be forthcoming.

No such question on my BB so... Some lower priced softeners control the
amount of brine refill water with the float (and Kinetico allows full line
pressure on the line/float when the control is in the service position).
Most higher quality softener controls control the brine refill with a
separate valve in/on the control valve and the (safety brine system) float
stops water if it rises too high in the brine tank so it doesn't overflow
onto the floor.

As to the softener not providing soft water until regeneration. A leaking
toilet flapper valve or water overflowing the overflow tube in the toilet
tank can cause that. A blocked injector and/or injector screen, iron or
other causes of fouled resin, the incorrect time of day on the control valve
and internal control valve leakage may be at fault depending on the make of
the control valve/softener. I think you need another service call.
