Default Asphalt Crack Question ?

Hi,

Have a typical asphalt driveway.
Where it meets the asphalt that the Town put down, there is about 1/4 to
perhaps 1/2 inch gap.

A bit too much, I think, for the typical liquid driveway sealer that
come in those jugs with a spout that HD has..

What specific product should I be using to fill and make continuous the
two asphalt sections, that would be "easy" for me to put down and fill
in the gap ?

Something from HD ? (hopefully in a single application)

Thanks,
Bob

Talk to one of the guys at your town garage/maintenance yard and
beg a 5G pail of cold patch. Most places I've lived they have
been more than "cooperative" -- if you are respectful of them
(and not "demanding").

There is some patch about the size of a pebble that would fill it. Pack
it with a narrow trowel, At 1/4" a liquid would work

Most driveway sealer manufacturers also sell a crack filler.

Crack-stix, Latex-ite, Pli-Stix, and USeal USA are all available at US
Home Depots.

Talk to one of the guys at your town garage/maintenance yard and
beg a 5G pail of cold patch. Most places I've lived they have
been more than "cooperative" -- if you are respectful of them
(and not "demanding").

Most "cold patch" is really to coarse to effectively patch a 1/2"
gap. The resiliant sealers sold by most driveway sealing specialist
companies do the job pretty well if properly applied. Products like
"Crack-Stix". They seal the crack yet allow for movement due to
expansion/contaction that cold-patch cannot handle effectively, and
can fill cracks from about 1/4 inch to 1 inch.

+1

Crack-Stix would be my first choice. Or one of the liquid asphalt crack
fillers available at HD, etc.

Yes, but you need to fill the crack with backer material. The depth of the crack
sealer shouldn't be more than 1/2 inch por so (see instructions).

That's where the "rope" type crack fillers I listed come in handy.
You "torch" them in and you can put in as many layers as you like, one
right after the other, to fill the crack. Still best to fill the
bottom of the crack with sand or whatever so you are only filling an
inch or so deep - max.

I've used foam solid backer rod many times too fill a space. Think
doors and window jambs. Not sure of R value -- it does stop cold
drafts.

It works well for what it was made for, but sealing a crack between 2
asphault slabs may not be it's best use Filling the crack with tamped
sand to within an inch of the surface, then torching in a resiliant
filler designed for the job that sticks well to both surfaces and can
flex with expansion/contraction of the slabs with temperature changes
is the best fix. Using backer rod under the filler could be a problem,
with the heat involved in torching it in. Also, it doesn't give as
firm a base as tamped sand.

Just my opinion based on some experience.
