Hello,

Trying to get the gunk and dried up grease out of motor bearings.
Unit is eons old, and armature won't turn easily anymore.

Tried Liquid Wrench, and also soaking in gasoline.

Neither seems to dissolve the stuff.

Anything better ?

I assume you mean a ball bearing...if sealed, pop the seals off and soak in fuel oil, brush, and blow-out the bear. Don't spin it dry with air! Re-pack and replace the seals.

Is the race actually *visible*? Many bearings are *sealed*.

Consider simply replacing the bearing? (what's it in?)

If they're open bearings try brake cleaner and or kerosene. Use a parts cleaning brush with long enough bristles to get down into the bearing and if the bearings are small, an old toothbrush will work. ^_^

Try using a detergent solution soak . Grease is oil and soap , if all the
oil is gone you're left with the hard chunks of soap that it was emulsified
with . You might try using an ultrasonic cleaner , but on low power . Some
believe the ultrasonic waves cause damage to the bearing elements and races
.. I don't know , I have no experience with ultrasonic units .

If they're open bearings try brake cleaner and or kerosene. Use a parts cleaning brush with long enough bristles to get down into the bearing and if the bearings are small, an old toothbrush will work. ^_^

+1 on the brake cleaner or even some gasoline. That is assuming the
bearing is separate from the motor and no issue of getting stuff in
the windings, etc.

+1 on the brake cleaner or even some gasoline. That is assuming the
bearing is separate from the motor and no issue of getting stuff in
the windings, etc.

In the past, I've used Electro-Wash from Chemtronics. It's been reformulated to protect the cute little ozones but it won't damage the insulation of the windings in an armature. It's available from electrical, electronic supply houses and industrial supply houses. ^_^

Ditto, for all the trouble cleaning it and not a guarantee it'll
last. I'd just get new set of bearigs.

The sleeve bearings are in the end housings of the motor? If so, the bearings could be porous bronze and are meant to be oiled from an oil soaked felt reservoir. Use something like 3-In-One oil or turbine oil and a tooth brush to clean the bronze bearings and soak the felt with oil. You don't want to soak the felt with cleaner unless you can remove it and squeeze the cleaner out of it then soak it with oil. Penetrating oil will also do a good job of cleaning and lubing. You can always post a picture to an image sharing site then put a link to it in your next post so everyone can see what you have. ^_^

Do a search for Ed's Red. It is a gun cleaning mix of something like
kerosene, auto transmission fluid, varsal, and acetone.

Just an equal mix of kerosene and ATF usually works well for clening.

Well, gasoline should ought have done the job.

I've also used spray can brake cleaner from the
auto parts store. Kerosene or diesel fuel are
hydrocarbon, but don't evaporate as fast as
gasoline. Small chance that acetone (nail polish
remover) might work.

After the bearings are freed up, ND30 oil or
Zoom Spout Turbine Oil might work for lube.
