Nothing like having a smart thermostat, that scolds you and then fines you for carbon offset fees if you have it too warm in the winter. Anyone old enough to remember Pres. There is a good possibility of water rationing for crops in my area in the future. Pesticide and fertilizer application rates come to mind also. Rules for fertilizer application are already in place regarding the timing of the application in the fall. Electrically powered irrigation wells typically have controllers that allow the power companies to switch them off during peak loads. A typical deal is the farmer elects to be off for possibly two days out of the week. He knows ahead of time which days it could be. The power company shuts off a number of wells depending on their need to shed their load. There aren't any laws against texting and farming that I've heard of yet. |

I thought Apple would buy Nest. Elegantly designed consumer products with very high margins fit into Apple's ecosystem. I wish that Nest would come out with connected, automatic, HVAC vents that talked to multiple thermostats. Probably the best way to greatly reduce wasted power would be to not heat or cool unused areas of a house. |

Probably the best way to greatly reduce wasted power would be to not heat or cool unused areas of a house. Unless the system is designed to accomodate it, there is only so much you can do later. For example, with central air, you can't just choke off a 4 Ton AC and try to use it to cool just a couple rooms instead of the whole house. A first step in that direction would be to at least have some zoning, so that upstairs and downstairs are independent. There are a lot of houses out there where to get it 76 upstairs, it's 72 downstairs, wasting energy. |
