There was a fellow named Shane, who evacuated
from New Orleans, ahead of Hurricane Katrina.
He wrote a blog (which out there in the ether) about
his experiences. His writing really changed my view.

Briefly, bugging out isn't necessarily what the novel
writers want to portray. It's often a lot of brain dead
boredom. The other thing he wrote, is that the
success of the bug out depends on preparation
before the event. An enclosed panel van may well
be far more useful than a pickup truck. If you can
keep your cargo dry, and put in a bunk for sleeping.
A shoebox of important papers may well be far more
essential than your big bad battle rifle.
