If ever in federal prison, you can search he

http://www.bop.gov/iloc2/LocateInmate.jsp

I just checked on someone I knew went to federal prison and was released
a couple of years ago and his name is still there with release date.
May be similar state sites.

You are correct to a certain point.

See:

The U.S. Marshals Service provides for the security, health and safety
of government witnesses, and their immediate dependents, whose lives
are in danger as a result of their testimony against drug traffickers,
terrorists, organized crime members and other major criminals

We already have a WITSEC program

I'm no expert but it is the route I went to find someone I knew was
sentenced to federal prison. He was a drug trafficker.

I also found someone just by googling his "name" and "prison". Found
out about his 14 DUI's.

It's hit of miss. Most of the internet people searchers want to be paid
and I hear they do not do a great job.

I'd need more detail.

Any arrest record.

Thanks

Landlords do all sorts of checks on people before renting. So there
are various services online for this. Many include criminal, SSN,
driving record, credit, etc.

Search for the words...

Got a buddy who's a cop?

Some cops, for a small fee, do background checks for landlords, employers,
prospective brides.

No. Site just tells you that they are there or when released. Nothing
about crime.

Others suggestions on contacting friends in law enforcement or legal
community are probably best bet.

Seems to me that we'll eventually find those cops (and perhaps the
person who paid the "small fee") during a criminal background check
sometime in the future.

Sounds pretty illegal to me.

My friend is a cop. I asked him about checking on a person through
state records (run a background). He was clear on the matter, that he
could do that -- unless he had a person detained on a vehicle stop.

Now! I once asked a facility resident FBI agent to locate a person
and too please provide me with an address. I gave details, DOB, state
of birth and approximate location (within three states). And the
reason for my request.

A few days later he gave the information. Never was a "fee" or any
request to do something illegal. Apparently he felt it was legal or
would have declined my request.

OP:

-- court records

-- hire a private investigator

-- just ask the local police what their policy is for a "arrest
record"

The guy you found in federal prison, look at the last three digits in
the inmate number. They will tell what federal district court his
case started.

Example:

Miami - 004

Atlanta - 131

Depends. I have some cop friends who sorta moonlight doing information
searches of public records. They say specifically that it won't be NCIC,
and it would be public portion of the DMV database, but they can do
pretty much anything a PI, for instance, could do and often quicker
because they know the short cuts.

NCIC checks are the perfect example of where you draw the line.

The NCIC terminal is generally (or should be) a controlled area with
controlled access. A facility may have only three authorized users:
Primary, Secondary and Alternate. Trained in legal ramifications of
any abuse.

My agency required a "log book", restricted keys and regular audits of
access. Abuse of the NCIC system could mean the agency could be
removed from access to the system. Law enforcement agencies need
that, so they protect the privilege.

I corrected myself above.

"... He was clear on the matter, that he
could do that -- unless he had a person detained on a vehicle stop.

Should read .. could NOT do that..."

My friend would not wrongfully access what he is not allowed to do,
legally. Hope I clear this up...

Thanks Oren. I manged to find what I was looking for under court records
online.

BTW: There is a nurse at the hospital where my wife works at that runs
CBC on patients to determine what kind of care she should give. She was
a cop or something like that.

Thanks to all that helped.

Something sounds wrong with doing a CBC to determine the care a
patient needs at a hospital.

Wrong... a person flopping around on the floor in a public hospital
needs a CBC for treatment? Who would have thunk it.

Stranger things have happened.

I'm thinkin' (being a nurse and all) that he is talking about complete
blood count. Sorry, O-man, but I think we a have "whooosh" moment here
(grin)
