Dishwasher no longer leaves film on flatware
I had posted a question about the whitish film my Maytag dishwasher was
leaving on stainless flatware and promised to post the solution when I found it. Well, I did. Whoever suggested TSP hit the nail right on the head. As it turned out, I was unable to find any at either Lowes or Ace so i had to go to the internet. Amazon sells it; it arrived today. The first thing I did was mix up 15% TSP (by weight) and add it to my box of Cascade, then ran a load of dishes. EUREKA! No more film. I want to thank all of those who replied to my post and offered suggestions. I was on the verge of buying a new machine but don't need to do so now. Thanks so much. Jay |

Watch them ban TSP next week. Buy several, before they do.

silicate stuff instead of the phosphate stuff. One poster on this list, had to go to internet, couldn't find it local. For my point of view, I'd call that "getting harder". -- Christopher A. My brother and I used it to scrub off calcimine before painting years ago. Bad job when there was calcimine. I think they were banning it in clothes washing detergents 40 years ago in Illinois. A guy I worked with was an Amway distributor and "recruited" me for a short time. As I recall he bragged how Amway got around that ban by labeling a TSP clothes detergent as something else. Selling point. I bought some too. --Vic |

It is here (Chesapeake Bay watershed) It is still available on other areas although it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it were banned in other unrelated areas for similar reasons. I'm guessing that that is why the OP had to resort to the interwebs to get it. nate |

If TSP isn't available in your area and you have to order it, you may want to order a related chemical - Sodium Tripoly Phosphate. It's functionally the same as TSP when used as a binder (softening agent) and also used as a seafood preservative. Not classically a consumer product, but available on eBay and the web in bulk. |

The stuff I got from Amazon comes in a white, gold and red box with red covering the bottom 2/3 of the box. At the top it says in a medium sized font: "Savogran". Immediately under that in very large letters: "TSP". Below that it says in medium sized letters: "Trisodium Phosphate" Below that it says: "All-purpose Heavy duty cleaner". It's the real thing. All the other products that I found locally were called "Substitute TSP". Now that I know the stuff works, I'll lay in a supply. The box I bought was just one pound but I can get bigger boxes. I just didn't want to buy one until I was sure it'd fix my problem. Jay |

That stuff is like 2,4-D and carbaryl: eventually they'll get around to banning it entirely for environut reasons. Definitely go buy up a bunch and store it in a cool dry place. I bought a 4.5 lb box today at a local paint and hardware store. 12.95 with tax. It should last me years and years for the dishwasher at a thimble full or less per load. I can even use some of it for cleaning floors etc. and still have lots left over. |

If you use powdered dishwashing detergent, empty the box into a big bowl, add 10-20% by weight or volume of TSP, mix well, and return (most of) the mixture to the box. I cut a big "X" on the top of the box, then, using a scoop and a funnel, get the power back in the box. I cover the "X" with duct tape. |
