OT, Do You Know Anyone Like This
I actually know a few people like this and all attempts by me to
help them have failed. I've tried to put them to work out of a sense of compassion but I can no longer afford it. :-( http://preview.tinyurl.com/4mvma5e TDD |

Besides, he has to hear about Jimmy Carter walking around mumbling "I'm not the worst, I'm not the worst, I'm not the worst." That can really wear a feller down. ^_^ TDD |

I actually know a few people like this and all attempts by me to help them have failed. I've tried to put them to work out of a sense of compassion but I can no longer afford it. :-( http://preview.tinyurl.com/4mvma5e TDD There's a large group of people where thinking is not an option. Some of them are benign, others do actual damage. Most are what my father would have called: "Useless as a Nun's ****." I gave a nice working receiver to "Rutabaga". Worked fine for a while until he stuck a screwdriver in the power wiring to see the sparks fly. Not once, but several times. The same guy tested hot melt glue by squeezing a bit on his finger, not once, but twice. Drinks beer out of a straw. I don't let him come around anymore. But bright guys can be complete screw ups. Laid off Lockheed engineer went to help a friend change her starter. After carefully examining how it was installed he declared that he needed a lift and a cutting torch. He also examined a friends car to determine why it was barely running and declared that the lifters had gone bad, it was running out of gas. He's the kind of a guy you can see working for days, and nothing is getting done. Then there's Patrick, I'm using his real name just because, who will screw something up so badly because he does everything in the laziest manner possible, and then cusses out people who have to fix it because they aren't working fast enough. Was just looking at one of his last screwups, laid nice tile on top of two layers of broken up vinyl. Left the edges in the old broken and then ran out of tile. Did it in such away that it all has to be thrown away and it looks like hell. I'm all for having friends for amusement, but I just don't have the time for those that aren't truly amusing. And I only let competent people help anymore. Jeff |

You can either let it go or we can run this thread out forever. Jeff You're dealing with people who read almost nothing except perhaps web sites run by angry loons living in their mothers' basements. Here's an example: Last week on a talk show, a competent reporter was explaining the justice department's new policy regarding DOMA (Defense Of Marriage Act). She explained it perfectly. Then, they opened the phone lines and the first caller began whining. Caller (with southern accent): It's real bad when a president decides to ignore a law. I mean, where's it gonna stop? Reporter: Sir, they're not ignoring the law. They're going to enforce the law, but if its constitutionality is ever called into question before the court, they won't defend it. If there are congressmen who want it defended in court, they'll have to appoint a lawyer to represent the government. This has happened many times in the past, very quietly, in almost every administration. Caller: Well, that ain't what I heard. Reporter: I just read Goeffrey Holder's letter twice for the listeners. Interpret it any way you like, but the meaning is absolutely clear. Caller: I'm tellin' ya - I heard they won't enforce it. Reporter: (Now sounding like she'd like to waterboard the guy to find out where he "heard it" from) Sir, there will be a link to Holder's letter on our web site. I'd suggest you read it. The surplus was gone already by the time his first budget would have passed. The surplus peaked in FY 2000 (ending 9-30-00) and was gone by FY 2001 (ending 9-30-01 and passed before the election, let alone before inauguration). The MAIN problem wasn't really the bank melt down (we have those every generation or so), the real problem this time was that everybody (corporate, Feds, states, even the individual) were tapped out all at once. With the unemployment rate, during the Bush years, of less than 5%, it was tough to add new workers. The unemployment number is always deceptive. Many many college students sat on the sidelines, their numbers were never reflected in that particular unemployment number. Governments run deficits in bad times and surpluses in good times. W insisted on running a deficit regardless. No, the U.S. government has almost always run a deficit. And how did all that trickle down economics work out? 401K's destroyed, housing destroyed, banks destroyed. And you approve of all that? That's the bad side. The good (e.g., 23 consecutive quarters of economic growth) far outweighed the bad. But all that evaporated as it was paper wealth. W called it the ownership society, that was of course, before droves started losing their homes. In fact people owned less of their home than in any time past. Remember when the DOW hit 14K, and then collapsed? The W tax cuts did nothing to stimulate the economy, if anything they put a lot of money in the hands of people that subsequently put much of that money in the CDOs and other exotic financial instruments that nearly brought this country to the brink of a depression. That is 6 trillion dollars not only thrown away but used to destroy the economy. And the current administration continued those tax cuts. Some people just cannot wrap their mind around the notion that we do not have a TAX PROBLEM, we have a SPENDING PROBLEM. It's both. The tax cuts are and were irresponsible. Spending is necessary in bad times and only the government can do that. Some 40% of the stimulous was tax cuts and much of the rest of it has propped up faltering state governments. You can hate any bureaucracy, government included. The services are necessary, maybe not all of them are for you, but everyone gets something out that they need. You can't take a farm subsidy and then bitch about PBS, well of course it is done, but you see what I mean. It'll take a while to recover the job market, it always does, but the economy is booming. That under Obama. Two years ago, it was in the tank. The economy is booming? Agreed that two years ago the economy was poor. Four years ago, however, the economy was superb. Not really. It was all puffed up from the housing "boom". Almost everyone knew it was insane. It was unsustainable. The amount of activity I see here is phenomenal, the material coming out of HD each morning is astonishing. It may not be that everyone has gotten over being tapped out, but they are spending. I see it everywhere. Jeff |

I can't accept this contention. While it is a rough number, it is a consistently rough number and is good for a comparison over time. Sorta like nobody really expects to get the EPA gas mileage, but the comparisons are still good. That's the bad side. The good (e.g., 23 consecutive quarters of economic growth) far outweighed the bad. But all that evaporated as it was paper wealth. W called it the ownership society, that was of course, before droves started losing their homes. In fact people owned less of their home than in any time past. Largely related to a combination of things, some W's watch and others way before. It is the simplistic one or two things caused it that drives me nuts. This is the result of 10-15 years of policies by people of parties. Re It's both. The tax cuts are and were irresponsible. Spending is necessary in bad times and only the government can do that. You can't take a farm subsidy and then bitch about PBS, well of course it is done, but you see what I mean. Of course you can. Not all subsidies are created equal. I, personally, am not too thrilled with either one, but each has to be taken on its own merits. THAT is what is missing in the budget debate. Neither side has really sat down and ask if this is even a proper function for government. Because a person gets what they need is a pretty poor reason to spend government money. We are living Alex's warning: "A democracy can not exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until a majority of voters discover that they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury". I can't accept this contention. While it is a rough number, it is a consistently rough number and is good for a comparison over time. Sorta like nobody really expects to get the EPA gas mileage, but the comparisons are still good. But what does it mean?: "Discouraged workers" who have lost a job, but do not make an effort to find a new job in a given week are not classified as unemployed or even as in the labor force. Both possibilities mean that the announced unemployment rate is not as definitive as it might sound. http://www.econmodel.com/classic/terms/ur.htm It is a number that is easy to banter around, even so, it was at 4.2% in 1/2001 and 7.8% (nearly double) and rising rapidly on 1/2009. In fact although virtually no jobs were added between 1/2001 and 1/2005 the unemployment number only went up only to 5.3%. In fact there are many things that can move that number. Of course you can. Not all subsidies are created equal. I, personally, am not too thrilled with either one, but each has to be taken on its own merits. THAT is what is missing in the budget debate. Neither side has really sat down and ask if this is even a proper function for government. The Republican side as I see it is always trying to starve the beast. In fact completely broken government is often the result of that. It sure was during Katrina and it also was when enforcement in the financial sector was cut back. I don't see that changing. Because a person gets what they need is a pretty poor reason to spend government money. Look at what has been targeted for cuts. It's lunacy and yet it does almost nothing to address the debt structurally. No one touches the third rail. We are living Alex's warning: "A democracy can not exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until a majority of voters discover that they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury". I'm all for cutting off all farm (~20B), ethanol (~7B) and oil (~4B) subsidies. Only a very few benefit from that and it's at the expense of the vast majority. Jeff |

Jeff Thies wrote: The Republican side as I see it is always trying to starve the beast. In fact completely broken government is often the result of that. It sure was during Katrina and it also was when enforcement in the financial sector was cut back. Katrina has little or nothing to do with money. The major problem with Katrina is that they followed the disaster plan to the letter. The Dome was never supposed to a long-term shelter. The idea was that people would ride out the storm and then immediately be parceled out to other shelters. Nobody through years and years of disaster preparedness ever got around to trying to figure out what might happen if the other shelters weren't available. Ooops. The other problem with Katrina is that none of the major participants (Brownie, the Mayor or the Governor) should have been let outside to play without adult supervision. So, when the original plan collapsed, nobody was able to come up with a usable alternative plan until the grown-ups (ie military) showed up. Then things stabilized relatively quickly. FEMA's mission statement specifically says that it's mission is only to provide help and assistance. It is not now, nor has it ever, been come in and run things. In fact since at the very least since the early 80s, the plans have always been that the locals need to be able hold things together for 72 hours on their own. I'm all for cutting off all farm (~20B), ethanol (~7B) and oil (~4B) subsidies. I would have done away with Fed Hiway funding after the Interstate system was done. Done away with most of the Fed taxes (kept maybe a 1% or two for research into construction methods and safety, something that everybody could use) and told the states they could raise what they needed by using part or all of the Fed taxes we were killing off. Education is also a function of the states. Again, the Feds might have an interest in general research into methods of teaching but the rest not so much. I mean look how long people have been making fun of the Helium stockpiles and nothing has been done. -- "Even I realized that money was to politicians what the ecalyptus tree is to koala bears: food, water, shelter and something to crap on." ---PJ O'Rourke |

Regardless that the LA National Guard's high water equipment was in Iraq (another genius move), the agency by Katrina time was in disarray with a disgruntled staff that was leaving at every opportunity. Another insult in lieu of facts. George W Bush deliberately blew a surplus, doubled the national debt under his tenure and left unlimited red ink due to his unpaid for and irresponsible tax cuts for the rich. For his first term he almost averaged more jobs lost than gained. For both terms the net job gain is less than 20K/month, that in a country that should be adding 150K workers/month from population growth. Governments run deficits in bad times and surpluses in good times. W insisted on running a deficit regardless. And how did all that trickle down economics work out? 401K's destroyed, housing destroyed, banks destroyed. And you approve of all that? The W tax cuts did nothing to stimulate the economy, if anything they put a lot of money in the hands of people that subsequently put much of that money in the CDOs and other exotic financial instruments that nearly brought this country to the brink of a depression. That is 6 trillion dollars not only thrown away but used to destroy the economy. I've known people like this. The ones I've known have been displaying either passive agressive, or dry alcoholic behaviours. Yet another insult in lieu of facts. It'll take a while to recover the job market, it always does, but the economy is booming. That under Obama. Two years ago, it was in the tank. Jeff Jeff, you strike me as an intelligent guy so I'd like your opinion on something I came across about the present financial crisis actually being due to an attack on The United States, basically economic terrorism. It's not a conspiracy dreamed up by some guy sitting in front of his computer in his underwear down in his mom's basement, it came out of The Pentagon from a contractor. It makes some interesting points and I believe there is some validity to the idea. http://preview.tinyurl.com/4zrkr2z http://preview.tinyurl.com/4t27cs2 TDD |
