Science as a Contact Sport

Please post your specific links. I will, too. Of course the real biggie -- what we are leaving our children and grandchildren -- is not quantifiable. Pity. If it were, maybe some of the major whores (apologies to honest sex workers ) in Congress might rethink their shrill denials. But don't hold your breath: Greed, lust for power and position, and in some cases religious fanaticism are the engines that drive these wretched climate deniers... Now to the SUBJECT : It's about a book entitled "Science as a Contact Sport", by the late (died in July), great, much lamented climate scientist, Steven Schneider. Schneider, co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize with other members of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Al Gore, has written a clear, readable, pull-no- punches account of how reputable scientists (like Jim Hansen) have been trying for over 30 years to warn us about what is happening to Planet Earth. Even ahr members who are well-versed in climate change could benefit from the history so clearly and economically set forth in Schneider's book. It could also help you to discuss/debate the issues with well- meaning but uninformed friends, and maybe, just maybe, with the "useful idiots" as they have been so felicitously dubbed by our corporate masters and their Congressional stooges. The neat thing about science is that theories can be adjusted by the facts: For example: The 2008 Climate Conference was held in Poznan, Poland. Temperatures were 11 degrees below normal. The 2009 COP was held in Copenhagen. All of Europe, including Sweden, was in the grip of the fiercest winter in many decades. They learned. This year, the conference was held in Cancun, Mexico. Even though the conference was in Mexico, the city experienced record lows (54 degrees). Just like house trailers attract tornados, I suspect the UN Climate Conference causes cold weather. Regrettably, in climate science, we've seen too many examples of facts adjusted to fit the theories. Most enlightening to me was the Heartland Institutes extensive examination of ground temperature stations which showed the reason for temperature increase measurements was encroaching civilization like parking lots with parked cars and houses. Ninety percent were out of spec. Then even if the earth is warming, how much is man made, if any? We all know past history of the earth with cooling and warming cycles. Thirdly, would change be cataclysmic as Gore suggests. there is no past history to substantiate this. To take draconian measures to control the climate with inadequate data would be the height of foolishness. Those promulgating it are the liberal control freaks. I remember reading something about some of the temperature sensors being over or around air conditioning condensing units which put out a lot of heat when running. I hate to see the dumbassification of science going on around the country. :-) TDD- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Only democrat believe in global warming Duf! I bet Palin doesn't. Yep, here it is! http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/...n6189211.shtml Now we know she's applied her mighty intellect to the problem, we can all rest easy. Heh Heh. |
