Can I hang a large (say 6' wide x 5' high) swinging wooden gate from
my concrete foundation wall? Quality of the concrete is variable -
uber-granite in places, talc in others.

Old gate hung from a post beside the house and had a wheel on the free
end. Post (and surrounding concrete) is broken about 8" below
surface Location is right at the end of the paved driveway - if I
dig a big enough hole to get the rest of the concrete out I'm afraid
the end of the driveway will collapse into the hole. (just had
driveway paved - suspect roller operator smacked the post but can't
prove it).

If this is viable, any suggestions for hanging the gate? Tapcon a 2x4
to the wall? Mount hinges directly to concrete wall?

If some of the concrete is sketchy, I don't know that I'd want to rely
on it. How about putting the post at the other end of the gate and
just have the latch side attached to the house?

I don't think I would hang a gate from my foundation wall. I think Rico's
suggestion is the better option.

Big wooden gates generate all kinds of dynamic forces.

Unfortunately, it's a double gate that opens in the middle. Only the
left side is broken.

We used to park the camper trailer on the concrete pad behind the
gate. Don't have the trailer anymore, so I guess I don't really need
the double gate, but I'm not sure how I'd close off the left side
without cutting into the pad to sink a post.

Looks like I'm going to have to dig that sucker out. Any suggestions
on breaking the concrete? I don't think I can manhandle a jack hammer
down a 3-4 foot hole (not as young as I used to be!).

If you replace that half of the gate next to the house with a fixed
gate that doesn't have to ove, you could easily attach it to the house
on the one side and surface mount the post on other side to the top of
the concrete pad. Don't make it overyly complicated, that way you'll
have more time to do other chores.

The fixed part of the gate could also be made removable, by setting
it in a cup in the middle of the pad, and padlocking it. This type
of gate is used a lot on entrances to seasonal campgrounds.

I like this idea. I've only opened the left hand side a few times
since we sold the trailer.

And there are 1 or 2 other things that need doing.
