Any suggestions, Never removed any that wasn't already failing. Sanding it down is the safest approach. A lite application of steam might loosen the glue if the piece is old. Post in rec.woodworking for more expert ideas but give more info approximate age: material under veneer: (look underneath) type of wood: thickness of veneer: |

Any suggestions, -- montela what is under it? if chip or pressed board, you won't get it off in either one piece or without damaging the substrate so much you won't be able to put another piece on top without rebuilding the top anyway. |

Removing veneer?
On 5/19/2009 12:02 AM montela spake thus:
Want to refinish a night table. It has a veneer coating which has cracked and chipped. I'd like to get it off. Any suggestions, I vote for the hot iron + steam routine. If the piece has any age on it, it'll be glued with hide glue which loosens nicely under warm moist conditions. Use a very thin scraper or palette knife to separate the veneer from the substrate. Easy does it. -- Found--the gene that causes belief in genetic determinism |

Removing veneer?
dig it out, cut it, and install a new section of pipe. that is ONLY way to really fix it. teh pipe did not swell from age, it swoll from not being emptied and freezing, most likely. -- WILLIAM21 |
