any suggestions on an easy way to get the hose on the shank w/o
'boogering' up the shank?

If, by shank, you mean a replacement end piece, try saliva. Then, flare the
hose end just a bit to make it more receptive. Come on...certainly you've
done something similar in the past. :-)

I have gently heated the hose with a propane torch to slightly soften
the plastic. Liquid laundry soap works well sometimes.

Wet the shank with saliva. Insert it into the hose and push it in as far as you
can by hand. Then hold the hose firmly in one hand, and tap the shank into it
with the flat face of a wood board. Or, a rubber hammer would work.
