The Veritas planes are very good -- square and flat right out of the box,
quite sharp with only light honing needed, sturdy and well balanced. Excellent
planes, and a good value.

But if you're not concerned about the price, buy the L-N.

Or buy the Veritas, and send the difference to me.

I agree with Doug. However, a #4 is alot of plane for the tasks you mentioned. A nice block plane like a Stanley #18 or #65 (no lateral adjustment but I love mine) is what I use for those tasks. A LN or Veritas low angle plane is great if you don't what to fettle (waste time setting up) the plane.
