outlet w/ ground since the new appliance requires it but how do i
connect the ground on the new outlet?

No offense intended... but this is pretty basic, and if you have to ask this
question, your skills and knowledge are not sufficient for you to do this job
safely by yourself. It's not rocket science, though, and there are many good
books on residential electrical wiring available at any decent library or
bookstore, and at all major home-improvement stores such as Lowe's or Home
Depot. Get a book and learn how to do it safely.

And remember that the FIRST thing to do in any electrical repair is to shut
off the power to the circuit you're working on.

There'll be a green screw near the end of the outlet. Connect the
ground wire to that. Also, if you're installing the outlet in a metal
box, that box MIGHT be grounded do you don't need the screw.

You have to first determine that you have a ground to connect to. If you
have a ground via metal cable, you connect a ground wire with 10/32 screw
from your box to the ground screw on the outlet, or in some cases you can
use a self grounding outlet. If you have a nm cable with ground, the ground
should already be connected to the box, if metal, and again, you connect a
ground wire from box to outlet

Don't you have to make sure the receptical you're installing is rated as
a "self grounding" type before you can rely on the receptical obtaining
a proper ground connection from a proven grounded metal box?

Well if your old outlet did not have a ground, what ground are you going
to attach to the new outlet?

Test it both before and after the shut off, to be sure you got it
right. Consider additional circuits that may be in the same box.
