Leaking Corrugated Roof Over Deck
I have plastic panels on a roof over a large deck, and the roof
leaks where it is in contact with the top of the wall of my house. (The gutters were torn out where the roof was attached to the house.) In particular there are leaks where the wooden beams that supported the corrugated materials are attached to the house. (which has traditonal shingle type roofing) A handyman plastered the leaks with silicone and that didn't solve the problem. Then he put flashing on the shingles, and it still leaked in the same places. Following that I visited the home of a friend who had a similar corrugated roof, and his roof had flashing (and not much silicone), and it didn't leak. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can stop the leaks. Any help would be appreciated because there is a nice deck under the roof. Thanks, JD |

Take it apart, and put it back together correctly, with a continuous flashing going from fully under a shingle layer, to well out over the corrugated. Water should have no where to go, but downhill where you want it. Use gasketed nails and/or a daub of sealant wherever you penetrate the flashing. If corrugated roof isn't well sloped, some of the purpose-built corrugated gasket stuff may be called for, to avoid a backwards water path under the flashing. From your description, I suspect the ledger board for the deck roof, and probably the old gutter board, are probably rotted by now and need replacing. There are supposed to be standoffs between ledger board and house, so water doesn't get trapped, and air can dry it out. One of the DIY books about roofing/decks/sheds etc, probably has pictures that explain it better than I can. aem sends... |
