Depends how you define its mission.

My friend has one and she loves it. Compared to not vacuuming at all
because you are too busy or lazy, it does a great job. Compared to
pushing a vacuum cleaner around yourself, it doesn't do so great a
job. It does a room at a time. Each room has to be prepared, so that
the roomba doesn't get stuck. If you have lots of clutter on the
floor, then you'll have to pick up before setting the roomba loose.
It also can't handle carpets with tassles - you have to tuck the
tassles underneath the carpet.

If your room is roomba friendly, then all you do is plug in the
charger, empty the dust bin, start the roomba, and go to work (or
wherever). When you get back, the roomba will have vacuumed (most of)
the room, and will be sitting in its charger. The next day, you move
the charger to a new room and repeat. My friend does a quick, light
dusting of each room when she starts the roomba. It's not a thorough
cleaning, but it's a lot better than nothing, and it's not much more
work (than nothing).

From the reviews I have read in newspapers, it is so-so at best as a vacum.
But I keep hoping to find a cheap one at a garage sale, just to play with.
Be great for keeping the cat entertained during the day, assuming you can
make it kitty safe.

We just purchased the Discovery model. We have hardwood floors and tile
in the kitchen, bathrooms and foyer. So far it seems to be a miracle
for us. Last night before bed I placed the chairs of the dining room on
the diningroom table and blocked off the kitchen. We hit CLEAN and went
to bed. When we woke up this morning the dinning room area and adjacent
halls were cleaned with 95% accuracy. Of course, it did not get the
real hard to reach places, but did an excellent job on everything else.

This morining I swept out the hard to reach places in to the open area
of the room and let it loose. It cleaned with very good efficiency.
This will not mean that you will not have to vaccum or clean the floors
at all or ever, but it great for those that need a daily sweeping of
vacuuming because of lots of dust or dog hair. It keeps the house clean
of dog hair with only a few seconds of my time to set up the virtual
walls and hit the clean button leaving our home ready for unexpected
guests all the time.... good product and we suggest getting the
unconditional replacement insurance from Sharper Image so that you can
use it and use it and use it ...without the fear of it burning out.
