Default How do I switch on the gas water heater, please?

Right after the last week's earth quake (5.6 mag) here in bay area,
California, I switched off the water heater. I was told that I need
to switch off the gas since there's danger of leaks during or after a
quake. There were, after all, about 40 after shocks and I was by
myself and new to the home and to these situations.

Now, I need to turn on the heater and I turned it on pilot mode and
did put it on the pilot and pressed the red button down several times,
even in quick succession, to no avail !

HELP!

Thanks in advance.

Archana.
