How long should I wait to paint a new construction house?
We recently purchased a new construction home and we are looking to
paint it. However, we have heard conflicting theories on how long you should wait before you paint it. I would appreciate any feedback! |

I would appreciate any feedback! Interior or exterior? What kind of surface is it? If it is outside, you want to paint it right away, the day it goes up. The idea is to seal the wood and keep water from penetrating the outside. For interior plaster, it is OK to paint as soon as it is dry, although some folks like to wait a few months for any cracks to appear. That way, you can fix up the cracks before you paint. -john- -- ================================================== ==================== John A. How long should I wait to paint a new construction house?
We would like to paint the interior of the house; however, we have
heard not to paint for one year. Others have told us that we can paint immediately. Any advice/experience would be greatly appreciated! wrote: We recently purchased a new construction home and we are looking to paint it. We heard that we should not paint for a year - others have told us that it is ok to paint when we move in. Any advice would be appreciated! Builders paint houses before they sell them, don't they? And many times it's to specific colors of the customer, not some std off white. The only issue I can think of is some folks may have in mind that there might be some tendency for more cracking due to shrinkage, settling, etc to occur during the first year. If you wait a year, you'd be able to fix those prior to painting. However, practically speaking, I don't think this is a big issue. If you really want to change the color, I'd go ahead and do it now. |

I would appreciate any feedback! Ask your builder, check your documents and find out for sure. I don't work in new home sales, but there may be a clause that says that you will void part of your warranty if you paint before a year is up. Houses take years to settle. If there's no warranty issue, go ahead and paint and you can always touch it up down the road. |

The part that might cover the builder paint that you want to change anyway? Houses take years to settle.
