Default House Painting

Might have a summer job lined up, primarily painting houses. Both
interior and exterior. Anything I should remember? Tips, advice,
technique, etc. Thank you.

As a wise painter once told me, you go slow when you need to go slow,
and go fast when you go fast. Learn how to cut in by hand. Also, use
good brushes and take care of them, cleaning brushes and stuff takes
time every day.

Outside - watch out for power linbes and bees nests. Painting is
oftentimes hard work but it's one of the few jobs where you have the
satisfaction of seeing the finished product, the result of your
handiwork.

Don't let them send you out solo for the first few weeks. (Unlikely any real
company would anyway, but...) The experienced guy will know what to do, and
direct you until he has a warm fuzzy about your skills. Stock up on
disposable clothes (unless company provides overalls and logo t-shirts),
cheap-but-comfortable tennies for footwear, and bandannas for headgear. If
you will be driving your own car home at end of shift, cover driver seat
with something, and keep a can of Goop and old towels in trunk. Overhead
work and high work on ladders can be very tiring- practice by dusting your
ceilings for an hour a day, and hanging off a ladder with one hand.

Make sure company provides you with appropriate safety gear- eyewear, masks
if needed for the paints/solvents you are using, belts, etc for high work,
feet and spreaders for ladders, etc. If something doesn't feel safe when you
are up on it, it probably isn't.

aem sends....
