Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction? I
am looking for low cost 12V 500mA regulated power supplies, getting
fed up of paying expensive RS and Farnell prices! They must be
suitable for both US and EU applications, taking in to account
different voltages and different sockets, I have seen a few small
"brick" designs which use a figure of 8 lead, this would be ideal!
Quantities wise I would only be ordering 50 at time...

Any idea's?

If size is not an issue you can get a single PC power supply for around
$(NZ)40 (13 pounds sterling) which amongst other voltages provide much
more than 0.5A@12V but typically have a switch on the back for 110V or
220-240V. Beware though because some supplies do have a minimum 12V load
specified.

If you are looking for 50 at a time the cost should be less because I am
just getting prices from a retail website.

My suggestion would be a multi tapped transformer in the front end, which
will allow for 110 VAC, 240 VAC etc and simple bridge rectifier circuit,
filter caps and 12V reg (TO220 package will suffice)

As for prebuilt units, I don't know of anywhere off the top of my head

Richard, I suggest that you talk to this company in Taiwan. I have managed
to get very good prices for a "universal" power supply that works with all
mains AC voltages in the world. I would also advise you not to even think of
trying to make a PSU yourself since there are a lot of reglations
(EMI/CE/VDE/FCC etc) and a lot of fire and safety issues that you don't even
want to think about.

I'm not sure if you're looking for an embedded PSU or a lump-in-lead type.
The lump-in-lead is usually the best option since you can provide the power
cable for different countries as a simple kettle plug type cable (as I used
to call it when I lived in the UK!). This will drastically cut down your
inventory costs since cables are cheap.

Ah, sorry about all of this, I don't think I made myself clear here. I
am not looking for some robust, high power, PSU type thing. Just
looking for some simple plug pack, 12V at 500mA, nothing too beefy at
all. I was currently paying around =A325 at Farnell for such a beast...
