I have the opportunity to purchase a 50" NEC plasma (model 50VP1, came
out about 3-4 years ago) for really short money. However, there is a
catch - the TV seems to have a bad power supply/board (shuts off after
15-30 minutes, then after it cools down starts again). The current
owner got a quote for $1000 to replace the power board. While that
seems a little high, I am wondering if there is a different route I can
take - purchase the part myself (maybe from an NEC authorized dealer)
and have a repair shop just put it in, maybe have the existing power
supply fixed etc. Any suggestions, feedback on that?

The cost on the power board is something like $900 plus the $100 to
install and perform the required voltage adjustments to specification.

Possilby, someone with the equipment and knowledge could find the
intermittent issue on the board and repair it to component level.

With all the severely burned in or cracked plasma panels I've seen surely
good used boards aren't too hard to come by?

Sounds like a thermal overload. Have you tried cleaning the dust and dirt
from internal parts on the power supply, esp. heatsinked parts?

I haven't bought the TV yet, I am this close though, I will try
cleaning the power supply, I guess it could be a vent or something. The
owner supposedly brought it to AA Appliances in Boston (they are big,
heard of them before and recommended by NEC) but they were awful. Not
sure if they even thought of cleaning it.

Now, two questions:
- who would be able to perform board-level repairs - someone with
knowledge of electronics, circuits or does it have to be someone with
plasma TV experience. What I'm asking is, is this a matter of finding a
short or something (apologies, as you can tell I am not very
knowlegeable) or do they need to know more about TVs and such

- also, if all the specs are the same (power in and out, amps not sure
what else), would any power board work or does it have to be
specifically for that TV? The TV is fairly old so I am not sure if I
can find a broken one (which would go for probably $300 - $500)?

Actually, got a few more details about the defect - aparently the power
board has a bad 70 volt line. Any ideas what that means, if it can be
fixed or do I need a completely new power board? If there is need for a
new power board what is the best route to get one - through the
manufacturer (they do not support the model anymore), parts dealer etc?
any concrete suggestions?
