You may have to repeat it a few times to get it all the way back to normal. If that doesn't work you'll need to borrow a manual degaussing coil or improvise with a bulk tape eraser or Weller soldering gun. |

averagebrian,
You may also try using the magnets to "rub" the color off of the screen. Starting from the center of the affected area, hold the magnet near the screen and move the magnet towards the edge of the screen. Repeat as necessary. -Trip a href="http://www.ecrunch.com"www.ecrunch.com/a |

Hi!
You simply need to degauss the TV set. For many sets simply leaving it off for a while and turning it back on will do the trick. Other sets may need to be unplugged for a long period of time (overnight) in order to degauss themselves. If that doesn't do the trick, multiple cycles may be needed to clear up the trouble. Failing that, use of an external degaussing coil (such as a tape eraser, or the proper tool) might be needed. There also exists the distant possibility that the magnets were strong enough to deform parts inside the picture tube. This is very unlikely though...especially with most common magnets. See the group's FAQ at (mirror) http://greyghost.dyndns.org/repairfaq/ for more information. William |

Turn the set off for more than about 30 minutes. When it re-starts, the
internal degaussing coil should degauss the mask in the CRT. It may not do the total job the first time. You can watch the set the way it is, even though it is a bit annoying. Eventually after the set's power is recycled over a period of days, the degaussing coil should eventually demagnetize the screen. If not, then there is a problem with the degaussing coil circuit, or the coil itself in the set, or the mask in the CR has been damaged. Normally a magnet will not permanently damage a CRT, unless it is extremely strong. It is not good practice to put magnets near to a CRT mask. Do not try to demagnetize the screen by seeing if you can neutralize it with magnets. This is not a good practice. If you are in a hurry to degauss the screen, you can call in your local TV service shop to degauss it manually with a hand held degaussing coil. You can also buy a hand held degassing coil from most of the major electronics parts distributors who specialize in parts for servicing TV sets. This item can cost about $80 to $120 US depending on the manufacture and model type. -- Jerry G. ===== "averagebrian" wrote in message ... this may be easy if you know how but since i dont know how im askin...HELP. my daughter was playing with a stack of magnets and found that they made a real neet rainbow on the 13 inch t.v. I think ill see how much the local t.v. repair will charge first. the t.v. that is damaged is only about $75 to replace. thanks again. averagebrian |

Had a set where an iron screen had been removed from around the power supply and flyback. That certainly didn't help picture, quite a rainbow effect. |

It won't get worse if it's left alone (unless your daughter plays with magnets again)! -- N |
