Default Philips 42PF9952/395 plasma problems!

Philips 42PF9952/395 . 42" Plasma (out of warranty of course!)

Friend watching TV the other day, picture/sound fine, then fairly loud
"crack!" and then no sound or picture only standby led flashing. Smell of
"burning" reported. Power off then on and picture tries to appear then TV
clicks off again to flashing LED.

Does anyone know of any known problems with this set? Any leads/links to
service info or diags procedures? I've never been "under the bonnet" of a
plasma before.

Could be a trip to the Philips service centre?

cheers for any information,

JB
