Sony KV-20XBR Service Mode?
Does the old (circa 1986) Sony KV-20XBR have a service menu or service
mode? I just received the TV back from the repair shop this week after a flyback, and some other ancillary parts (HOT), replacement. All is basically fine with the set, except the convergence appears to be a bit off as compared to what it was previously. I'm just wondering whether it has a service mode, or you must converge the set the "old fashioned" way? I have the necessary convergence test equipment, but no technical info. Also, were may I find a service pack, i.e. schematics, etc. for this set. Are Sam's PhotoFacts, or equivalent, still available? Thanks, Don W9CW |

I know because I had one in shop last week for a estimate and the flyback transformer was split. Sony KV-20XBR Service Mode?
This model does not have a service mode. The convergence in some models of
Sony XBR's have some pots on part of the scan board for trimming the convergence and the pin set-up. The corners are also done with slip magnets. All of the tubes use ring magnets for the centre convergence, and purity set-up. I suggest you DO NOT mess with the convergence, unless you have the proper pattern generator, and know exactly what to do. I have seen a lot of people really screw up their sets with this, and many service men are not very good at doing convergence. The main part of the convergence is done on the CRT with ring magnets, and on the sides of the tube with slip magnets, as like all other TV sets. In the service modes of TV sets that have a service mode, I have not very often seen convergence controls. After changing the flyback in these models, it is very possible that the convergence can be effected. I am surprised that the service man did not check this out! Also, did you have the tube manually degaussed after the set was re-installed? After a number of power cycles the internal degaussing coil may clear this up over time, if it is a magnetism problem on the mask of the tube, and not from the characteristics difference with the new flyback. If you sent your set to an authorized Sony service centre, I would be surprised if the set would be delivered with bad convergence. This is one of the things that is specified to check when doing any type of horiz scan servicing, or power supply servicing. Another thing that interests me, is that why would someone want to put in good money on a 1986 set? Many of the parts are no longer available from Sony. I am sure that the tech must have used some type of generic replacement flyback. I have sometimes had problems with these. I would also be surprised of the picture tube is not soft by now. Considering the age of many of the other components in the set, I would not expect it to be very reliable over the long run. You can get a very good 20 inch Sony TV these days for under $400 US. The new set would be superior to a 18 year old set, and also have a descent warranty. The new set would probably last you at least 6 to 10 years, which I doubt you will get out of your 1986 set, since the repair. -- Jerry G.
