PlayStation 2 ejects tray too fast
Hi,
the problem with my PS2 started about two weeks ago... 1. The console loses the system settings every time I reset the system. 2. When I press the eject button the tray opens too fast and the PS2 doesn't realize when it's open - so the motor makes a whining noise while trying to open the already opened tray. 3. The only way to get the tray back into the console is to reset the system. 4. I get "disc read errors" when I enter the PS2-browser. So far the description of the errors, but there are some things I want to mention: - the PS2 was not being modified (I was the first one to break the guarantee-seal because of the defect) - no soldering was done until now - I didn't drop it on the floor (it was standing just beside my TV for months) - all fuses are working - all cables are in perfect shape - the model is a SCPH-30004 V3 with a GH-007 mainboard and a GD-013 daughterboard (I read that 30001 models had such problems, too) Another strange thing is that the system was working for about ten hours yesterday (I played about two dozend games), but when I wanted to play with it some hours ago, it was broke again. Well, I was searching the web with google for about one hour and the only help I found was that I saw postings from people with the same problem on several bulettin boards and some PS2 being sold on eBay with this defect... but I couldn't find any solution to this problem. :-/ Can anybody help me repairing my PS2? Bye, Chris P.S.: Yes, I could send my PS2 to Sony... but this would cost about 100 Euro + shipping (somewhat more than 120 USD) and I would like to keep my old PS2 with the iLink. :-) |

yesterday (I played about two dozend games), but when I wanted to play with it some hours ago, it was broke again. Did you turn it off in the meanwhile? If so it may be a heat related problem (i.e. the unit only works when it is warm). In that case I would check the electrolytic capacitors. If the previous sentence sounds like goobly gook to you, take the PS2 to a qualified serviceman. -- Peter van Merkerk peter.van.merkerk(at)dse.nl |

Yes, but I tried it again right now - the console was on for about one hour. Same problems. :-( .... and I just entered the triangle-menu of the PS2. Usually the option "console" (I guess it's "unit" on US-PS2s) says "SCPH-30004"... but right now it's "unknown". Strange, strange... Chris |

Hmm, I guess not... at least no game froze until now and it didn't smell burnt if you mean that. Was it ever operated in an enclosed space with little ventilation that is allowed to heat up? Well, it stood vertical beneath my TV... the lower side touched the board of the shelf but I guess this shouldn't be a problem - would I operate it horizontally, it would stand on this side all the time. I remember that sometimes the exhaust fan did spin faster than when I just switched the console on after I was playing for several hours... Does the rear exhaust fan work? Yes. Bye, Chris |

I don't know if it would cause the faults you report, but have you
checked the internal rechargeable battery? I have already replaced the battery but the problems remain. :-( Bye, Chris |
