Default How do you converge a direct view ATC221 chassis?

I personally have a 34" direct-view HDTV based on the ATC221 chassis
(D34EW11), I bought the thompson CD to figgure out how to correct some
geometry errors and converge it, but I can only find references to
converging the projection version of the chassis in the manual. There
is no convergence selection in the service menu. I'm guessing if I
opened it up, there would be at a minimum static convergence rings
around the crt neck, but there must be more than that. I did a
full-text search of every file on the CD, the only references to
convergence are the PTV models.

Any clues?

Thanks.

For all the standard consumer sets, there are only the static rings at the
back of the yoke. The most inner ones on most sets are the purity rings. On
the walls of the tube, extending down under the yoke windings are the slip
magnets for the sides, and corners. On the wall of the tube, there may be
some button magnets, that are for the fine pin adjustments, and for the
outer edge or corner purity. The tolerance of the shadowmask in the CRT,
and the CRT is also very important for the accuracy of the convergence and
purity.

In the consumer sets, unless it is a very high model, there are no
convergence controls in any of the menus or service mode. Most sets only
have some basic pin adjustments in the service menu.

This is all very tricky to mess with, and if you are not very experienced,
you will end up making the set worse than it is.

You need Chipper Checker ...and software.
MCM has them on sale.

Mechanicl adjustments of convergence and purity rings on the neck of the crt
and physical location of the yoke. Like any other Direct View Tele. Might
want to use a 1080 convergence patteren tho.

I have the chipper check manual (it's on the CD), it also only
mentions convergence for PTV's. It has a few other functions, but
mostly it seems to duplicate what is already available from the
service menu.

Are you _sure_ a chipper check will allow me to converge my DVTV?

On RCA direct view, RCA manufactures their CRTs which is very good but
were 95% of time has beam bender band (sets the convergence & purity
during manufacture) wrapped around the CRT neck next to the deflection
yoke. That band is non-adjustable and please consult RCA for their
mininum specs on convergence error. If it's above mininum, have tv
exchanged or tube replaced.

BTW, this is 16:9 34" direct view, compatiable with HDTV.

All makers of projectors (including RCA) and most of direct view sets
has convergence & purity adjustables except 5% of RCA CRTs with purity
& convergence rings. Seen them, but very rare.

Cheers,

Wizard
