Default Best place to buy speaker foam surrounds

I picked up a pair of Bose 901's from the side of the road. Yeah, I
know that's probably the best place for them, but they're in good
condition apart from rotten foam surrounds. I'm wondering if anyone
knows of a good place to get new surrounds for a reasonable price. The
cheapest I've found is $40 which still seems high for what you get. If
possible, I'd prefer cloth surrounds, but those kits seem to be $70 and
up. Where do all those people selling them on ebay get their
surrounds? I don't see how they can cost more than pennies each to
make.

Good question. Dalbani used to sell them very cheap but all they have left
are 8" and are not restocking them. MAT has advertised them for a while but
never has them (like much other stuff in their catalogs). If someone knows
of a supplier that sells them in bulk and not in the silly $25 kits I would
love to know. I have just about depleted my inventory.

I'd be interested in other sizes too. I frequently run across speakers
that would be worth the time to fix just to see if they are any good,
but not worth the expense of a kit.

I wish I could remember the name but there's a speaker repair service
in NJ that sells the surrounds in bulk. They were at a NYAS audio
flea market a few years back.

Have you tried MCM, PartsExpress, Madisound, etc and asked about it?

Where do you find them in their catalog? I seem to be missing it. The only
thing I see are the kits which are ridiculously priced...over $20 each for a
pair of surrounds, some glue, etc. We used to buy the surrounds for less
than a buck each from Dalbani. At those prices you can't justify repairing
most speakers when you consider the parts cost and the labor.

I have plenty of glue, etc. I just need the surrounds at a reasonable price.

I looked, and you are correct, the prices have gone up precipitously since
the last time I accessed them. They often have sales and closeouts, which
is usually where Parts Express has the best deals anyway. FWIW, the $40 kit
specific to the 901's contains ten surrounds, which puts the per-driver
price around $4 apiece...not so bad if all of the drivers in your system are
wasted.

The other kits run in the neighborhood of $10 per surround, which I agree,
is damn high for what you get.

I bought a set from Parts Express for my 12 " Pioneers. Kit worked great. The
$20 may have been high, but refurbished speakers from Pioneer were $350/pair.

My opinion would definitely be to leave the 901s on the side of the road.
18 drivers to refoam. Sounds like an all day job to end up with a really
mediocre sounding set of speakers...without any deep bass response if you
don't have the equalizer for them.

I've gone with parts express, they seem to be the cheapest. They do carry the

After you get done, ebay for an equalizer (if you don't have one), or list
them and use the money to buy some real speakers. They're actually worth a
fair amount of pocket change.
