Default NEC FE950 Repair info

Folks:

I have a beautiful 19" NEC Autosync FE950 go dead on me a couple months
after warranty expiry.
After inquiry, I was informed that repair charges would be about the cost of
a new monitor!
Damn shame.

If anyone has info on repair manuals, circuit diagrams or pertinent FAQs, it
would be greatly appreciated.
I'd like to try to repair it before trashing it.

It was showing signs of weakness with periodic collapse of the image before
finally going blank.

Thanks,
Al

It's a shame the repair is so expensive because from your description
the problem doesn't seem to me all that serious or costly to repair.

Often a vertical output goes dead because some electro cap went weak
thus forcing the circuit to work extra hard to compensate due to the
negative feedback loop. The vertical output IC is often a 2 to 5 dollar
part and the bad electro maybe another 50 cents. Or it could simply be a
bad connection on the yoke output socket or a cracked solder!

However, repair centers do have to make their margins somehow. I'm not
saying the repair center is gouging anyone but they are at the mercy of
overhead costs and have to charge some flat rate to cover themselves in
event the problem takes longer or needs more parts to repair. The
customer with the cracked solder pays for the one that needs a flyback,
etc. Besides I bet they simply swap the main board out for a rebuilt one
for a sure fire fix, due to the difficulty in repairing smt stuff, and
alternatively that could explain a lot of the steep cost to you. Things
are getting physically smaller and harder to repair these days. I
thought the writing on signal diodes was getting awfully tiny before!

Thanks for the feedback Asimov.
I'll look into it. I'm not an accomplished repair guy, so any help is
appreciated.
