Default Sony CD KSS 213E on an HCD NE3

"No Disc" - how I hate lying computers, "no data" - fair enough.
Dull red laser spot, focus and sledge operate correctly, spins up, until
stopping after third attempt. Cleaned lens, and internal cover glass. Good
cap ESR, both ribons check continuity ok.
Tried adjusting power pot a bit but no change.
Pushing the sledge cog around either way , the servo will return it, so
focus presumably ok.
Sometimes it will sit with "reading" in the display permanently and disc
spinning almost top speed until switched off. Where to go next? I've another
(salvaged) KSS 213E, unkown condition , will try replacing but I suspect
something more downstream.

Highly likely to solve the problem. If not, you know for a fact it is not
the pickup, and you now have a spare pickup.

Unless you really want to spend hours under the hood instead ......

I replace lots of KSS-213's and their flex cables on later model Sony's.

Is that the phenolic/kaptan ribbons or the plasticated ribbon that flexes on
sled movement.
I'd noticed the little pcb with the power pot was loose and could move
around so perhaps straining the otherwise non-flexing flexible ribbon up to
focus coils and laser. ?

I did not expect that, slid out slideway rod and swapped KSS 213 and the
thing worked without hickups. I assume that there was enough operation to
set the focus coils and sled to zero-in on track 0 but not enough for data
readout.

Yes, that's the one.

I don't think it's the yellow / brown flat wire to the coils and laser
diode - I just think it's crap semiconductor material, either the laser
diode itself, or the diode pack on the output side.

Looks like you've got it handled anyway...

It was PbF solder for this one although 2004, could be something to do with
it
