Default LG DVD recorder RH200 - drive problem

The dvd-r drive in this unit has gradually stopped playing dvds of any
kind, cds work ok. cleaning has not helped so it looks like terminal
laser failure.

This drive has IDE connectors. Where can I find a suitable replacement
drive? has anyone tried generic pc DVD writers? Which type should i
look for?

the ref on the original drive is:

603 wo12581 15 RS 01a A PB free 6721RFN021A

here's hoping.

FWIW, I've used PC IDE LG writers in supermarket branded DVDRs.

Try attaching your writer to a PC IDE port and check how it is
reported in Device Manager.

BTW "PB free" probably means "lead free".

"6721RFN021A" appears to be the part number of the "deck assembly".

thanks for the pointers, Frank. My pc has in fact an LG dvd writer. I
will try to experiment later in the week.
