Default Looking for electronics specialists to host a tv show

National Geographic Television is looking for an experienced engineer
or certified construction worker to host a new ten-part television
series.

The ideal candidate will have a diverse range of experience in one or
more of the following industries: aviation, shipping, rail freight,
construction, mining, or civil engineering.

You don't have to have an engineering degree, you just have to prove
that: you have engineering experience, you love your work, and you
have the ability to communicate that passion to others.

Professional certification in welding, commercial diving, metal work,
or electronics is desirable.

The series will be broadcast on National Geographic Channels both in
the United States and around the world in the second half of 2008.

Send resumes and inquiries to: by October 20 2007.
Better still send a video of yourself on the job to World's Toughest
Fixes, C/O National Geographic Television, 1145 17th Street NW,
Washington DC 20036.

The most creative scam to date ... but still a scam.

Damn. That sounded so good, until I checked the domain and found that
it doesn't belong to the National Geographic Society. See the bottom
of:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Geographic_Channel
for the real URL's. I also found it difficult to believe that
National Geographic would post such solicitations from a throw away
Gmail account. So much for my 30 seconds of fame.

Better still send a video of yourself on the job to World's Toughest

World's toughest fixes? I don't have any that are suitable for
general consumption, but I can offer some of the world's toughest
customers. I've also gotten myself into a tough fix with the law and
with the bank, but those are also too boring.

ngs.org is indeed registered by National Geographic Society, and the
street address given by the OP matches. It is not a scam.

FWIW, a more verbose description:

Argh. You're correct. I goofed and looked up ngs.com instead of
ngs.org. I'm still suspicious, but the email address is correct.
http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/results.jsp?domain=ngs.org
My appologies for the misinformation.

Hmmm... digging a bit deeper, after downloading a Java applet, the
URL:
http://web.ngs.org
is "Welcome to Secure Web Services for NGS Staff".

Looks like this message has also appeared recently on several
Craigslist locations.
http://www.google.com/search?q=fixes%40ngs.org
Some of these mention Peter Rees, the producer of Mythbusters and a
National Geographic series producer.
http://www.linkedin.com/pub/3/760/1A8
Seems to fit, but the variations in job title is rather unusual.

There's one reference to "World's Toughest Fixes" at:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22world%27s+toughest+fixes%22
which kinda looks like an accidental leak. Dunno.

So, do I drop everything and clean up my resume?

If you really are interested enough to check it all out, go for it. Get a
phone number and call them. Open up a new e-mail address at your provider
and just use it. Wotcha got to lose ? Nothing if its a good 'un, and a
little bit of self-respect if not. At the end of the day, what can they
actually be scamming you for, at least in the first instance ? Looking
forward to seeing you staring at me out of my box ... !! Keep us all posted
(Ha, "posted" - get it ?)

I can say for sure that you'll never be chosen to host this show, if you
don't. Go for it.
