Hello,

I've got an IBM 8482-9MU (x206) eServer which I'm turning into a
general utility station. I've wrapped up the configuration of almost
everything except for one tiny detail: it has a separate USB hub for
the front USB ports, and Windows XP does not recognize them. It
catalogs them as an unknown device.

I've searched IBM's information, and they mention no drivers (or even
issues in the support DB) for this issue.

Does anyone have any advice on how I might get Windows to recognize
these things?

What Windows XP service pack are you running? If these are USB 2.0 ports,
you will need SP1 or later.

When you have installed the service pack, delete the unknown device from the
Device Manager. Then force it to look for new hardware. If the ports are USB
2.0 ports, they will be recognized.

Running XP Pro SP2. I've deleted them from the device manager and
forced it to scan for new hardware, but it still only returns them as
an unknown device.

IBM 4690 OS V4 and various versions of UNIX (SCO, Caldera) see these
ports just fine. However, this particular machine will be running
Windows XP (blech), which for some odd reason can't see them.

I even updated the BIOS in an attempt to get it going, with no luck.

If you have the drivers, do a manual install.
control panels, add remove hardware
let it search and not find the hardware
Yes, I have already added the hardware
Scroll to the bottom of the list and select 'add new hardware device'
add hardware that I manually select
show all devices, next
have disk, browse to the drivers location and install the drivers

Good luck. This should work even if plug-and-pray doesn't work.

Of course, you may have plug-and-pray disabled in your bios.

I don't have the drivers, and the IBM repository doesn't offer any, so
that option is out.

I suppose you could install an OS that does see the device and then run
windows XP under VMware on that machine.
