We bought this unit new a month ago and on top of the poor layout of the
baskets, this morning, the unit's drain pump was running continously and
according to my wife, an error code of "E1 (water leak) or IE (water
inlet trouble)" (big difference) was being displayed. Even after cycling
the main breaker and getting PF (power fail?) indication the pump
continued to run even with the door open and the unit apparently off
(display dark).

While this was happening I poured about a 1/2 gallon of water into the
sump and confirmed that the unit was draining correctly. After a bit of
fooling around, the pump shut down on its own and we were able to run
an apparently good wash cycle.

What is going on? Is this model a problem? What usually causes E1 and IE trouble codes?

It sounds like a sticky relay/solenoid. If it happens again, you might
(all kidding aside) attempt the sudden-impact-resolution-solution. I
keep a rubber mallet (really) for such applications so as not to
damage anything... the act of picking it up somehow adds just enough
humor to cool down the frustration. But a swift tap in the
neighborhood of the pump relay will tell you whether that might be the
problem.

Good idea! This might explain why my pouring water into it seemed to
help. I wonder where the float switch is hidden?

Usually it isn't hidden, it's in the wash bowl, however your model may vary.

Operative word is "tap"... But, yeah.... depending on the level of
frustration, that tap could vary in intensity.

But if a stuck solenoid (or a stuck float-switch), the tap would be
indicative either way. My concern with the stuck switch is that I
would not expect this to handle full pump voltage directly, but rather
trigger a solenoid or relay. And I am also trynig to figure out how
the pump would remain running even with the door open or the unit
technically in the "off" position. But, as you note, they don't make
'em like they used to, so the interlocks and relays may no longer be
standard.

We have a Bosch that is approaching 7 years old at this point that has
been flawless in its performance. This after two GE "Profile" types,
the first lasted less than a year and was replaced by GE at no cost,
the second barely made 2 years before it died suddenly and
permanently. My take on dishwashers is that if one has to wash the
dishes first, then they are worthless.

I researched LG the last few weeks as we were ready to ditch our old
unit. The reviews were terrible with many mentions of Error "E1". You
should probably google that combo and see what you get.

I got a Bosch.
