CRT Monitor crackling (also when powered off)
Hi all,
As the subject says, my trusty Samsung 17" CRT has developed an intermittent crackling noise, which would seem to come from the back area. It's also present when the monitor is powered off, so I would think it has something to do with the power supply circuitry. Now i'm no electronics technician, but I do have a multimeter and a soldering iron.. Does this sound something I can fix with a moderate amount of effort (and without zapping myself)? -Bob |

Bob:
While "meatplow's" reply to your posting was rather blunt and direct, his assessment is absolutely correct... this is not something you are going to be able to repair yourself given the information in your original posting. If you want, you can do some more research by going to the website for this newsgroup at http://www.repairfaq.org/ there, with some search time you will find a lot of relevant repair and SAFETY information that will most certainly confirm the probability that this is not a home DIY repair. It may be time to take it to a shop for at the very least a repair cost estimate or replace the monitor. But if you let it go on like this, more serious problems may occur. --- sam | Sci.Electronics.Repair FAQ: http://www.repairfaq.org/ Repair | Main Table of Contents: http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/ +Lasers | Sam's Laser FAQ: http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/lasersam.htm | Mirror Sites: http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/F_mirror.html Important: Anything sent to the email address in the message header above is ignored unless my full name AND either lasers or electronics is included in the subject line. But learning how to be safe in there isnt hard, and the fault is fairly likely to be no more than a broken solder connection on the power supply, which would be very repairable. NT |

Fixing your monitor? no. Sticking the iron and meter up Sitre Magana's ass? Yes. |

You can try to clean it, but first you should read the manual. You have to, of course pull the plug, wait a few minutes, then open it up. Also, you might have to discharge the high voltage. Being careful, do not move or bent anything, use a small vacuum, to suck out all the dirt. P.S. The high voltage can still be there with the power off, and the plug pulled! Careful! My 2 cents worth! |
