Locate the filament dropping resistor and short it out . That will let a
couple more volts to the tube filament and fix the picture for some time

Thanks, but it is currently 10' above ground in a cabinet (still in
use.) I will monitor its deterioration, and look for the best set
that is less than 26" wide in the meantime. Tough to find a 24" screen
in a less than 26" wide package. The 24" WEGA is 25.8" wide.

Which has better longevity: a CRT or a LCD?

LCD, hands down. The backlight is normally good for about 50K, but it
can be replaced with some effort.

That's what I thought. Thanks.

Any thoughts on purchasing a (actually 3) high quality TV today?

I'm out of the loop as to what stuff is any good these days. Someone
else will probably have some recommendations, I think most of the LCD
sets are pretty similar though until you get into the high end stuff or
the really super cheap crap.
