Default Sony Replacement CRT Wanted

A friend of mine out in AZ called me tonight looking for a CRT to replace
the one in his Sony KV-32S25. He doesn't want to put a lot of $$ into this
set as it will be used in his kids' room. So a liquidator or service shop
that's got one that they're stuck with from a cancelled repair job would be
an ideal find as he's looking to keep the cost under $400.
The CRT part number is 8-733-743-05.
If anyone knows of a very good deal on some leftover stock, I would
appreciate hearing from you. I'll pass the info to my friend, or put you in
touch if you have the item for sale. Thanks.

Good luck. That particular tube is known for premature green cathode
short failure. Virtually every one of that tube of that vintage I have
seen in the last 5 or so years has all been bad in the same way.

Why is the tube bad in this one?
If it is the common cathode to heater short, a manual method of
removing the short may work.

IMHO that particular tv model is not worth putting $400 into it. $400
would go a long way towards buying a like new but used Sony tv set in
that size that does not need repair.

This was my general feeling, but the guy has been known to keep his car for
more than 30 years and keep rebuilding the engine. Go figure...

I don't know what the particular failure mode is--he didn't go into details.
It was a call asking for help in finding a replacement tube. He doesn't have
USEnet access, so I figured I'd put the question out here and see if someone
knew of one available CRT.

Things like TV sets are not generally worth fixing, IMHO. Even a working set
is worthless. I don't own one because there's nothing on worth watching. :-)

In any case, the tube is no longer available as a new part from Sony.
If he really wants to have the tube replaced, try Video Display Corp.
out of Atlanta, GA if they are still around. They use to sell rebuilt
tubes.
