Default Mains and Earthing

Please explain,

By chance when a light socket was checked, was found that when the electrician put his meter across the Live and the Earth (Yel/Grn) wire
it showed that it was live,
the same as when he checked between Live and Earth wires.

This was not so with N & Earth.

When a check was made in the consumer unit, the same showed there too.

No additions or alterations were made to the house electrics recently.

Any explanations please?? Thanx, ulindel

Sounds like you're in the UK. If so, earth and neutral should be at the
same potential difference - near enough. If an earth is showing
considerably above neutral voltage the chances are it's not connected.

BTW, no UK light bulb sockets have earths. On a proper modern installation
the earth is available at the ceiling rose. Older ones had no requirement
for this, and although the cable was probably twin and earth, the earth
wasn't always connected.

A proper place to ask, though, is uk.d-i-y
