The opposite extreme just a sine table, in an eprom maybe, feeding a
16-bit DAC. Clock that from an an analog oscillator or a DDS. That can
get down to a couple of 10's of PPM distortion. For purists, you can
move the sine lookup into ram and tweak the values to tune out
successive harmonics, and get down to low PPM distortion.

Tricks, like sweeps or quadrature outputs, are easy once you go
digital.

Hmmm, that's starting to be a sound card.
