Default Get your Very Own Neander Gloat (VONG?) at Books-a-Million (maybe)

Stopped by the local BAM store to check out some travel books. Walking
by the "Blowout Sale" bin, my eye caught a book titled "The Handplane
Book" by Garrett Hack. It was the Hardcover edition and it was 7 bucks
but 6 with my wife's discount card. Honest to Gosh, there are more
planes and kind of planes than you can shake a stick at and this book
is full of beautiful photos of hundreds of different types. Includes
their history, how to tune them, their cutting geometry, how to buy
them, modern makers and more. Did I mention beautiful photo's on every
page? I'm no Neander, but I think this is a terrific book and a really
great find at 6 or 7 dollars. Drop by your local BAM and see if they
have a copy. I would have bought multiples at this price but they only
had the one. Amazon sells the paperback for 11.00 and I just watched
an ebay auction for the paperpack go for just under $20.00. Go figure,
some people just don't comparison shop I guess. I've no idea how many
copies other BAM stores may have, if any, but it's definitely worth a
stop to see. Good luck!

While I'm happy that you got a great deal on a fantastic book I despair
somewhat that it was in the discount bin.

Hopefully the softcover version is still on the shelves at full price.

Oh yeah... You suck.

So what is BAM? Barnes and Noble or Barnes and Mobile?

I wouldn't despair too much. I noticed a couple years ago that they had
hardcover versions of that, I think Leonard Lee's sharpening book, and some
other mainstay gottahave'em Taunton Press books at Christmas time.
Presumably as special froofified gift editions. I've subsequently seen
plenty of the regular paperback versions over the last couple years. I
think it's fairly safe to assume that this is the case in the OP's
situation too. B-a-M is just dumping the overpriced holiday stuff after it
failed to sell.

Probably.

Books that are not sold can be returned to the publisher for credit.
It's always a nice surprise for the writer to note the amounts under
"Returns" on royalty statements. I imagine they try to unload them at
or near cost first to save the handling hassle of shipping them back,
though in the case of mass market paperbacks, the books tend to stay
there with the covers ripped off (the covers are sent back to the
publisher; the books is supposedly put out with the trash. That's where
all those low priced coverless books you find at yard sales come from).

Books-A-Million. Third largest book retailer in the US. Mainly
concentrated in the deep South/Southeast, expanding north into Ohio/Ill and
west towards Texas
