1 being the country code for the US. You can find the worldwide list
online.

Elsewhere in the world, you might need to use the country code for
local calls.

From a guy with 30+ years of experience with long distance telephone
communications - going back to rotary dials and coming forward to
robo-callers that are smart enough to count rings, recognize the
"beep" of an answering machine and only start playing the message then
if a human didn't answer. Yes, they seem be be a rare breed of
robo-caller.
