Default Sandpaper and something to get you off your Off topic rants.

Since you guys seem rather lacking a real woodworking topic,
I thought I would start one.

No flies, no Bush league stuff, no crapola.

I was making some sandpaper storage units, got tired of having curled
paper, or having to sift through tons of different grades/ manufacturers.
And tired of lining up holes on my ROS.

Anyway I started using up some different papers.

I have a load of Mirka, and a little 3x Norton, regular Norton, and 3M
Freecut.

Some opinions:

The mirka white paper is useless. I have to use it up. In a few strokes
there is no grit left. It turns a gray and is pretty much gone...

Mirka gold, is quite a bit better than the white. It last much longer.

3M freecut gold ... lasts quite a bit, but turns the wood gold or yellow.

Norton Gold regular, like the Mirka it lasts pretty ok.

Norton 3x AWESOME... it lasts and lasts. The grit just hangs in there,
it doesn't load up the same as the stuff above. I don't know what it is
about this stuff, but it will be what I buy going forward. I have not
tried Klingspor, So I can't compare.

Yeah, I have noticed recently that we are starting to look like this
bunch:

The recent level of labeled or unlabeled OT's is increasing.

Try posting woodworking content and the same five or six folks post a
message or two, then it's over.

I agree that Norton's 3x sandpaper is indeed one of the best sandpapers,
if not the best, out there that can be bought locally.

That pretty much matches my experiences. I don't know if the Norton
actually lasts 3 times as long, but it definitely lasts longer. It might
even exceed the 3 times.

There was a review (which I haven't read yet) of various vendors in
recent FWW...noticed they did do measured testing of removal rates,
longevity, estimated from those a cost-effectiveness for each as the end
result.

For routine 5" round I use pressure sensitive in bulk rolls obtained
from the local auto-body supply. It's generally either 3M or Norton;
quite a lot cheaper/sheet than any of the other alternatives in pricing
and at least as good as any except very expensive Klingspor. I've not
done much volume recently so still working on last batches so not sure
what current pricing actually is but I'd suggest checking it out for
those who do use large enough quantities that a large roll isn't
overstocking _too_ greatly...

I went on ebay a few years ago and got over 500 sheets of sandpaper for
about 50 bucks. Mostly 3-M brand, aluminum oxide, garnet, wetordry (in
grits up to 2,000), a variety of other stuff. It's more flat paper than
I'm likely to use in my lifetime.

Especially now that most of my sanding is with a Bosch, even though
those disks run between 50 cents and a buck each, because it does such a
better job than any other kind of sanding I've tried. So, I'd personally
like to know, where's the best source for 5" hook-and-eye, 8-hole
pattern ROS paper?

I have noticed that storage affects the paper's longevity as well.
Humidity just kills some of the Mirka paper-backed stuff.
In sheets, I really like the Norton3X a lot, except that here, Home
Depot is stupidly expensive.

I have found that Festool paper lasts pretty good and especially the
"Crystal" papers. Part of the longer life from the Festool papers is
because the superior dust collection when coupled with a vac. With less
dust build up the paper stays cooler and lasts longer and does not clog
as quickly. I have found that with the Crystal Festool paper that I can
sand the squeezed out glued joints of 7-8 drawers with out glue clogging
the paper. Down side is that you would probably need a Festool sander
for that paper, or that could be a good thing.

I see you want to start a conversation about the Bush administration and its
relationship to sandpaper. As you recall, Bush was in a league, the American
League, as managing partner of the Texas Rangers baseball team. Sandpaper,

I mentioned earlier a comparison in FWW recently...

Looked it up; turns out it was in FHB instead (last issue)

Of those they rated, Klingspor VD900 was rated tops overall and also
best value.

Unfortunately, the selection wasn't all that extensive and the
Norton-branded used wasn't 3X so there's no way to tell how they would
have stacked up head to head in their evaluation.

Mirka Gold was in the pack; maybe 2nd for one of the grits used...

There is, or was, a flag one could set in the header that said "do not
archive". In Pan there is a profile section called "Extra Headers" which
I suspect is where the flag could be added.

But it is up to the archival site to honor that flag or ignore it.

At least the US political posts, full of US self-importance, are very
similar to sandpaper, in the way 40 grit would be so abrasive to the rest of
the world trying to participate in a woodworking group.

Nothing new here.

I see you want to start a conversation about the Bush administration and its
relationship to sandpaper. As you recall, Bush was in a league, the American
League, as managing partner of the Texas Rangers baseball team. Sandpaper,
as you may also know, is stricktly prohibited in baseball (unscrupulous
pitchers sometimes used a bit of sandpaper to rough up the ball, making
difficult throws easier).

Monitoring sandpaper usage gave Dubya a unique perspective and honed skills
that would become useful later in his presidency. For example, detecting
WMDs even though they were well hidden.

LOL!

In the US we're free to ignore speech that irritates us. You don't have such
freedoms in Canuckistan? Most of us are even smart enough to know how to use
a killfile.

Nothing new here.

Indeed. The whining continues.

Most of us are also smart enough to post properly and trim posts...

You didn't, we do, you don't, you did, and you didn't.

Best of luck with those.

You need to change that "most" to "a few".
