I don't post on here much anymore, so many people have lost newsgroups, a
lot of the old members are not around here anymore.

Actually, I was an early adopter of FB to keep up with my daughter in the
UK and my grandsons, and my youngest in college. My youngest daughter is
visiting in the UK now and we have been part of the entire experience
through both FB and Skype. Basically, it's as close to being there as you
can get.

i get it that many people use this technology this way - I'm just an old
fart that does not embrace this particular technology this way. I'm glued

I was a former member of a usenet/computer group that got overrun by
trolls, now we have a private invite-only group on FB with about eight
people trusted to be admins (read original members). 38 members on the
group now, and a very lively community, more fun. on topic, no trolls etc.

The invite-only being the key, Karl if there is an interest, I can help
you set it up, it took about a year to get to the point it is, first
members have to friend a member, and then invited. There is a document
on the page that links FB names to usenet names if people get confuzed, etc.

We are quite happy with it.

A plus is that it tends to add civility to the general discourse ... I feel
like the guys here who are also on FB are indeed "friends", we "know" each
others wives, children, siblings, pets and, as much as mutually allowed,
their interaction with same ... last thing you want to do is to get into a

I agree that it certainly expands the interaction, in some ways even
more so than a phone. UseNet is pretty darn shallow unless you bump
into folks who one is more familiar with through FaceBook.

I am on the fence a bit as to what extent I am willing to go with it.
My friends have most pertinent info on me already anyway, but not all
know my shoe size. I like to see the faces of those I interact with,
am always curious about their families, pets, hobbies, what they see
when they look out their kitchen window.

My youngest's BFF just came home from an Italian student exchange
after 3 months. As if she never left. My daughter threw a party for
her in our back yard, and at one point, when the bonfire was low, I
looked down from the deck, on that crowd of about 30, and saw at least
20+ little lit-up screens.... they were all together and STILL texting
each other...G

We have an account but it isn't "mine".

I participated in our high school's scholarship selection process this
year. The school Principal warned some of the candidates about
Facebook content. School administrators, counselors, grad school
selection teams and employers are finding way to get access to
Facebook material. Postings about last night's party, a hangover,
drinking, or a conquest are ending up is student files; and in
selection processes. A few months ago I watched an old co-worker get
himself laid off because of less than discreet Facebook comments.

Yeah, I know there will be a rash of comments regarding privacy,
lawsuits, etc. But at the end of the day, when you put it on the
internet, it is on the internet.

don't do facebook. Just cannot warm to that medium for interaction.

hearsay of those with a basic misunderstanding of the issues and
resulting in playing on each others irrational fears.

However, I do agree with you ... some folks should never be allowed near
a computer in the first place.

don't do facebook. Just cannot warm to that medium for interaction.

Tried it. Didn't like it. Can't cancel it. Best I could do was
unfriend all my "friends" and inactivate my account. But the account
is still there. Sorta like marriage--easier to do than undo.

Click "Account" pull-down tab, upper right of screen...
Click "Account Settings" from selection...
click on "deactivate" on Deactivate Account line near bottom...

Went to look for the message I replied to, but couldn't find it
immediately and got sidetracked ... I figured as much.

I made the switch from WLM to TB when Vista came out ... took a while to
get used to, but TB is SOOOO much better than Windows Lame Mail,
although I still miss a few of my favorite OE shortcuts, like CTRL H,
which marked everything read, even threaded messages.

Not sure really.

I opened the computer and located the yellow striped green wire running
from the power supply to the SD C: drive. I wiggled it and then looked
around for a while.

Then I installed Thunderbird.

One of those actions fixed it.
